The Civil Engineering division is undertaking a £208 million design and build project to enhance Docklands Light Railway (DLR) infrastructure to allow the current two-carriage trains to be upgraded to three-carriage trains. South Quay station is one of a number of stations forming part of the project.
During a recent weekend possession, the station was closed on Friday evening and a state-of-the-art replacement opened 125 metres away on Monday morning. The new station had to be rebuilt further down the line where the track is straight. The former South Quay station was on a curve, meaning that platforms could not be lengthened to accommodate the new three-carriage trains. The new station includes a full-length canopy to provide weather protection for waiting passengers and two ground level concourses.
The DLR Chairman, Ian Brown, said: “The new South Quay station is a prime example of our ability to carry out complicated engineering work with as little disruption as possible.”
